To kick off the TU Dortmund University Lectures in Jewish Studies and Politics, adjunct lecturer Dr. Annette M. Boeckler gives an inaugural lecture on the issue of characterizing Judaism. The event held by the Department of Humanities and Theology provides an insight into the debates on varying definitions.

When Jews became citizens of their countries during the 19th century, the characterization of Judaism as a religion in Germany influenced the creation of Jewish structures under religious law. However, the discussion whether this definition applies to Judaism continues. In an English lecture with German slides open to all students and employees, Dr. Boeckler presents the impact of definitions as a religion, a people or a civilization on Judaism.

About Dr. Annette M. Boeckler:

After concluding her rabbinic education in London and Amsterdam, Dr. Boeckler has taught at the European rabbinic seminary Leo Baeck College in London and has led sermons in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Portugal.
