Honorary Doctorate Awarded to Prof. Ed Folsom

President of TU Dortmund University Prof. Manfred Bayer and Prof. Patricia Ronan (former Dean of the Department of Cultural Studies) will award an honorary doctorate to Prof. Ed Folsom (University of Iowa). Ed Folsom is one of the leading American literary scholars and has dedicated his research to the poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892) and his work.

In 1996, Ed Folsom was a Fulbright Professor at TU Dortmund University. For almost 30 years, the literary scholar was responsible for the partnership between the University of Iowa and TU Dortmund University. The “Whitman Week”, which he founded with international academics, took place in Dortmund for the first time in 2008 and has since been organized annually at universities around the world. Prof. Folsom is also the co-founder of a major Digital Humanities project, the “Walt Whitman Archive,” one of the first and by now most comprehensive digital archives devoted to a single author.

Prof. Christopher Merrill, director of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa and one of the leading voices in international cultural diplomacy, will hold the laudatory speech.
