More Than Just Good Grades: Scholarships Come in Many Forms
Do only highly gifted students, those in financial need, or those who are particularly dedicated receive scholarships? Far from it! More than 40 criteria can play a role in the selection process—such as field of study, family background, or personal interests.
The number of funding opportunities is also greater than many people realize: In Germany, there are more than 2,500 funding organizations and scholarship providers. Many of these opportunities are also specifically aimed at students in their later semesters. And although more than two-thirds of all students have never applied for a scholarship, the application process is often manageable: a letter of motivation and a resume are usually sufficient.
In Focus: The Germany Scholarship
In addition to the basics of scholarships, the session covered the application process, selection criteria, and the question: Who are foundations actually looking for? It became clear that, in addition to academic performance, commitment, interests, and personal background can also play a role.
Special emphasis was placed on the Germany Scholarship— specifically the “ ” funding, the online application, and the selection process.

Great interest and many questions
The first-year students showed great interest and made full use of the event to ask their questions. The atmosphere was open and lively—a successful kickoff for the lecture series “Getting Off to the Right Start.”
At the end, information was provided about the TU Dortmund University’s scholarship advising service as well as other websites and search engines for finding suitable funding opportunities.
The most important message of the afternoon: A scholarship is not an opportunity reserved for only a select few. Anyone who does their research and applies can discover new possibilities for their own studies.
