Our talents
The lists for the TU Dortmund University talent scouts' consultation hours are well filled. Together with the talent scouts, the young people work out where their interests and talents lie - also outside of the classroom. They then start looking for suitable courses of study or training opportunities. Here we introduce you to some of the talents.

“I had to complete my entire degree in German, even though it is not my mother tongue. That was a huge challenge. But if you have the will to achieve something and you have the strength and belief in yourself, then you can do anything!”

“My most important tip: You don't have to know exactly what you want to do later on from the outset. It's completely normal to discover new paths during your studies or career. ”

“As a special needs pupil, I always wanted to go to university - but I didn't have any role models. Talent scout Eric opened the doors for me: he accompanied me from my choice of study to my successful application for a scholarship. Today, I study with support, am involved as a TU Guide and talent mentor and experience every day that determination and social commitment are more important than perfect grades. ”

“I always wanted to study, even though a lot of things were new and unfamiliar at first. As a TU Guide, I love advising prospective students and taking away their awe of the university - with little tips and tricks, the campus quickly becomes familiar.”

“The Talent Network meeting opened my eyes to new opportunities. I didn't even know that there were such events where you can network and support each other. Especially as a first-time graduate, every exchange with other students helps me to cope better with my everyday life as a student.”

“Even as a child, I found the university world fascinating, but without an academic environment, I didn't know what to do with my curiosity. NRW talent scouting opened the door for me: I discovered what was possible here and, thanks to my scout, I also received a student scholarship. This long-term support helps me enormously to find my way - whether it's about doubts about studying or plans for a semester abroad.”

“Being the first in my family to go to university was a matter of course for me. It was only during my studies that I realized how valuable good advice can be. NRW Talent Scouting not only gave me tips on literature research and time management, but also put me in touch with other talented people. I knew that I wasn't alone with my questions. This support kept my back free and encouraged me in my goal of inspiring children to learn later on.”

„Financing my studies was a big challenge for me: I was no longer eligible for BAFöG and I didn't want to be a financial burden on my parents. So, with the support of the talent scouts, I started looking for a suitable scholarship. That was really helpful because there are so many funding opportunities that you can lose track. I thought that only the best students get scholarships and that they also do voluntary work on the side. Fortunately, I was wrong. I was successful with my application - without top marks in every module.“

„Before my studies, I took part in the TU Dortmund University's SchülerUni. There I found out that the talent scouts offer support with scholarships. We looked together to see which scholarship would suit me and then I simply applied. I can only encourage anyone who is interested in a scholarship to do the same. If you're not successful, nothing happens. Otherwise, a scholarship is a great opportunity. You get valuable contacts with companies and can study without any great financial pressure.“

„I am currently doing my year of recognition as a nursery teacher. I really enjoy working with children, but I still wanted to continue my education. My mother works in management and I find that really exciting. Katharina Schnetgöke from Talentscouting gave me confidence and information to encourage me in my choice of studies. It was helpful to hear that I could do it. I have now applied for a place to study economics. I would like to set up my own education center later on. Let's see if that works out. I like to write poems about my wishes, dreams and ideas. I have a poetry slam group with a few friends. It's very relaxing for me after work. “

„I actually wanted to study psychology. However, the NC for this subject is very high and I can't yet say whether I'll end up with the necessary A-level grade. But I definitely find the subject exciting. Together with my talent scout Annette Jendrosch, I started looking for alternatives. Subjects such as social sciences and sociology are obvious choices. To give me first-hand information about these courses, Ms. Jendrosch put me in touch with a talent scout who had studied sociology and was able to answer all my questions in a 50-minute phone call. The talent scout also made me aware of the SchülerUni program. I have already been able to attend a few lectures. “

„I have always been interested in natural sciences. I didn't realize how many degree courses there were in this field. Most people only think of medicine. When I clicked through the homepage of the Technical University of Dortmund, I noticed the bioengineering course. Ulrike Magarin from Talent Scouting provided me with a lot of information and put me in touch with Dr. Paul Kerzel from the Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, who gave me good advice. I recently applied for a place to study bioengineering at TU Dortmund University. In my free time, I supervise an international class with young refugees. I am also involved in the House of Diversity, a cultural center in Dortmund-Dorstfeld. “

„Architecture has fascinated me for a long time. The initial discussions with talent scout Barbara Bernhard were therefore mainly about studying architecture. I had already completed an internship in this field during my school days, which I enjoyed. Over time, I realized that the career prospects for young architects are not particularly rosy. As I still wanted to work in the construction industry, I discussed the civil engineering course with Barbara Bernhard. It sounded really exciting - and after talking to a student at the Dortmund University Days, I knew it was the right thing for me. I can well imagine working in project management on large construction projects later on. “

„I have been involved in the 'Miledo - Miteinander leben in Dortmund' association since I was 14. People with and without disabilities spend their free time there together. A friend who studies rehabilitation education took me to Miledo back then. I've also been looking after a group for three years where I teach three boys with disabilities how to swim. I knew quite early on what I wanted to do professionally. During the consultation hours, TU talent scout Ulrike Magarin gave me an insight into different degree courses that would later involve working with people with disabilities. I didn't know much about rehabilitation education. It sounds very interesting to me and I will look into it further. “

„Before I attended Veronika Diring's first talent scouting consultation two years ago, I didn't know what I wanted to do after graduating from high school. During our first interview, I had questions about the dual study program in mechatronics. But that didn't really fit in with my ideas. At our subsequent meetings, Ms. Diring asked me about my interests. We also talked about what I like to do outside of school and what my hobbies are. In the end, I discovered mechanical engineering or automotive engineering. I think that suits me much better. Now I'm getting ready for my A-levels and hope that everything goes well.“
