Leave of Absence from Studies

Upon request, students can be granted leave of absence for important reasons. The leave of absence is always for the duration of a complete semester. The application must be made anew for each semester. A leave of absence is not possible in the first semester of a Bachelor’s program. A retroactive leave of absence for a completed semester is also excluded.

The basis of every leave of absence is that at least 50% of the lecture time (not semester time!) is covered by the intended reason for the leave of absence.

The information on the important reasons and the documents to be submitted can be found on the   application for leave of absence.

Please use the corresponding form, the  request for leave of absence. Please send the completed and signed application as well as the required documents to the Student Registration Office. If possible, please also provide a telephone number and an email address in order to be able to clarify possible queries quickly and easily.

The deadline for the summer and winter semester is always the Friday before the beginning of the lecture period of the semester for which the leave is to be requested. An overview can be found on the  page Dates & Deadlines.

Your leave may only be granted if the documents submitted are complete and you have already paid the amount shown on the application within the re-registration period. For payment after the end of the re-registration deadline, a  late fee has to be paid.

If your application is approved, you will be sent a certificate of enrollment as proof of your leave of absence. You will be informed in writing if your application is denied.

In the application for leave of absence, the respective semester fee is listed for each particular reason for leave of absence. In some cases, AStA Dortmund has decided to waive the amount for the AStA contribution for students on leave - this has already been subtracted.

The following applies for all reasons for a leave of absence:

Every student on leave of absence will receive an  NRW/VRR semester ticket via email to the  UniMail address after re-registration/leave of absence.

Students can either use this ticket or contact the General Student Committee (AStA) for a refund.

Further information can be found on the  AStA website.

The  Central Examination Administration is the contact for questions relating to the organization of examinations.

In principle, you are not authorized to take examinations during a leave of absence:

  • You may not submit any coursework.
  • You may not fulfill participation requirements or acquire study credits.
  • You may not take any written or oral degree-relevant exams.

Repeat examinations may be taken.

Participation requirements that are the result of a semester abroad or an internship itself may be acquired.

The leave of absence may possibly affect the examination regulation applying to a free attempt to improve a grade.

Students on leave of absence due to raising and caring for their own children or caring for relatives are entitled to take examinations.

You may not earn any credit points for internships that you complete during a leave of absence.

If you receive BAföG, it is advisable to ask the BAföG office to what extent a leave of absence can affect the payment of BAföG.

Location & approach

The campus of TU Dortmund University is located close to interstate junction Dortmund West, where the Sauerlandlinie A 45 (Frankfurt-Dortmund) crosses the Ruhrschnellweg B 1 / A 40. The best interstate exit to take from A 45 is "Dortmund-Eichlinghofen" (closer to Campus Süd), and from B 1 / A 40 "Dortmund-Dorstfeld" (closer to Campus Nord). Signs for the university are located at both exits. Also, there is a new exit before you pass over the B 1-bridge leading into Dortmund.

To get from Campus Nord to Campus Süd by car, there is the connection via Vogelpothsweg/Baroper Straße. We recommend you leave your car on one of the parking lots at Campus Nord and use the H-Bahn (suspended monorail system), which conveniently connects the two campuses.

TU Dortmund University has its own train station ("Dortmund Universität"). From there, suburban trains (S-Bahn) leave for Dortmund main station ("Dortmund Hauptbahnhof") and Düsseldorf main station via the "Düsseldorf Airport Train Station" (take S-Bahn number 1, which leaves every 20 or 30 minutes). The university is easily reached from Bochum, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Duisburg.

You can also take the bus or subway train from Dortmund city to the university: From Dortmund main station, you can take any train bound for the Station "Stadtgarten", usually lines U41, U45, U 47 and U49. At "Stadtgarten" you switch trains and get on line U42 towards "Hombruch". Look out for the Station "An der Palmweide". From the bus stop just across the road, busses bound for TU Dortmund University leave every ten minutes (445, 447 and 462). Another option is to take the subway routes U41, U45, U47 and U49 from Dortmund main station to the stop "Dortmund Kampstraße". From there, take U43 or U44 to the stop "Dortmund Wittener Straße". Switch to bus line 447 and get off at "Dortmund Universität S".

Dortmund Airport offers flights to several destinations in Central Europe. There are regular connections to Katowice, Kraków, London and Munich. For the approximately 20km-trip from Dortmund Airport to TU Dortmund University, you can use a shuttle bus to the railway Station "Bahnhof Holzwickede", from which trains depart to Dortmund main station (please visit Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr for more information). Normally, the fastest way is to catch a taxi at Dortmund Airport.

The H-Bahn is one of the hallmarks of TU Dortmund University. There are two stations on Campus Nord. One ("Dortmund Universität S") is directly located at the suburban train stop, which connects the university directly with the city of Dortmund and the rest of the Ruhr Area. Also from this station, there are connections to the "Technologiepark" and (via Campus Süd) Eichlinghofen. The other station is located at the dining hall at Campus Nord and offers a direct connection to Campus Süd every five minutes.
