Teaching with a focus on digitization

TU Dortmund University sees itself as an educational institution in which excellent research and excellent teaching mutually benefit from each other. Teaching at TU Dortmund University aims to arouse students' curiosity about science and to promote the acquisition of the necessary competencies for active participation in the process of knowledge generation. This aspiration is anchored in TU Dortmund's mission statement of good teaching and is continuously being developed. One focus is currently the further development of digital teaching.

In addition to the existing offerings, measures for the support and further development of digitally supported teaching have been initiated and implemented under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Wiebke Möhring, Vice President Academic Affairs, and Bianca Schumacher, Deputy Head of University Development and Organization.

Measures

New teaching formats today are often digital or digitally supported, such as the use of virtual labs or the integration of AI technologies into teaching. The coordination office Digital Teaching aims to stimulate and shape the discourse on excellent, digital teaching at TU Dortmund University across all departments, to support teachers as best as possible in the development of innovative, learning goal-oriented formats, and to bundle and further develop university didactic and technical expertise.

By centrally informing teachers about calls for funding for innovative teaching-related projects and providing targeted support and strategic guidance to TU Dortmund University when submitting applications, numerous teaching/learning projects have been successfully obtained and profitably implemented, including from the Foundation for Innovation in University Teaching, the Digital University NRW, and the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of NRW.

Studies and teaching at TU Dortmund University are consistently research-oriented: Students learn to classify and critically question scientific findings on the basis of the most current state of research. Through project-based teaching/learning formats, they are also actively involved in research processes and thus in scientific processes. The expansion of research-oriented and also international Master's programs - especially in the profile areas of TU Dortmund University - is therefore a focus of the strategic university development planning.
