Expand your own skills: Training and courses
Offers for researchers in all qualification phases
TU Dortmund University's Graduate Center offers courses on science communication topics for researchers in all qualification phases. Workshops are held on Communication Strategy or the use of Social Media for Researchers.
Researchers can also deepen their skills in the field of science communication in inhouse training courses. The training program offers courses on topics such as Introduction to Science Communication or Writing for the Web.
Researchers in the postdoc phase
For researchers in the postdoc phase, the Research Academy Ruhr also offers events on the topic of communication. This is a program run by TU Dortmund University together with the Ruhr University of Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen as part of the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr).
Doctoral students
Doctoral students can also take part in workshops at the Hybrid Learning Center (HyLeC). The HyLeC workshops cover topics such as creating videos or podcasts. In self-study units, programs and technologies are also explained in order to implement your own podcast projects or video presentations.
From grant applications to social media: Counseling at TU Dortmund University
The Office of University Communication advises researchers on grant applications based on the guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (only German) on science communication in project funding. The office's staff also offer advice on planning social media accounts for their institutions.
Mission Statement Good Science Communication
In 2022, the Rectorate adopted the Mission Statement Good Science Communication. It is intended to serve as a guide for scientists at TU Dortmund University and sets out the principles that are important for responsible communication with the public.
Get active: Develop your own offers
There are numerous opportunities at TU Dortmund University for researchers who want to present their science to the public. For example, they can take part in the Open House Day or organize an offer for school students at the KinderUni, Girls*Day or Boys*Day.
There are also opportunities for external science communication in Dortmund beyond the campus, for example at Science Night, Science Slams or the DORTBUNT.city festival. Exhibitions can be presented in the city center at the Hochschuletage in the Dortmunder U.
Media services for researchers
From designing a website and producing your own videos to planning social media channels for your institution - TU Dortmund University offers a wide range of support and advice for researchers to present their research to the public.
External offers in science communication
In addition to TU Dortmund University, there are also external providers who support researchers in their scientific communication. Here, scientists can register as a contact person for their subject area, receive support in case of conflicts or expand their skills in training courses.
In media databases, researchers can register as contact persons for their subject area in order to share their expertise and assessment of current scientific topics with journalists. TU Dortmund University researchers can register with the Informationsdienst Wissenschaft (IDW) database via the Office of University Communications. At the Science Media Center Germany, registration is possible by self-application.
External providers also offer a wide range of training and courses on science communication for researchers. The website Wissenschaftskommunikation.de provides an overview of various training courses (only German).
