Studium Fundamentale
In the interdisciplinary Studium Fundamentale at TU Dortmund University, students study beyond the contents of their own subjects. In this way, they can get new ideas to think about and develop a deeper understanding of problems, findings and approaches to solutions in their own discipline as well as in other scientific cultures. In this way, they not only broaden their educational horizons, but also acquire key skills that can only be taught to a limited extent within the framework of a specialized degree program. Looking at other subjects counteracts extreme specialization and prepares students for their complex tasks in their future work life.

The Studium Fundamentale is an interdisciplinary and modular program, in which students attend designated courses. These include
a. courses specifically designed for the Studium Fundamentale,
b. events designated by the departments as appropriate for students from other departments,
c. interdisciplinary courses of the own department.
Students of the Bachelor’s programs in Computer Science (with a minor in Economics and Business Administration), Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Information and Communication Engineering, Spatial Planning, Educational Sciences and Journalism as well as of the Master’s program in Computer Science participate in Studium Fundamentale.
For students of the degree programs involved in the Studium Fundamentale, participation is mandatory. Students of degree programs that have not incorporated the Studium Fundamentale into their curriculum on a mandatory basis may participate in individual parts on a voluntary basis; they will be issued a certificate in this case.
