General information on second hearing status

Students who are enrolled at another university as first-time listeners (or main listeners) can be admitted as second-time listeners at the TU Dortmund upon application. The status of second-time listeners is differentiated between "great" and "small" second-time listeners.

The deadlines for second-time listeners differ depending on whether you want to apply or enroll in a restricted or open admission program in the first or higher semester. Here you will find an overview of the dates and deadlines.

The second-time listener fee is 100.00 Euro per semester.

With a parallel study program, you study two different degree programs at TU Dortmund University. Please note that only one degree program may have admission restrictions.

Costs: If you study in parallel at TU Dortmund University, you only pay the regular semester fee once per semester.

The great second listener

As a great second listener you will receive a matriculation number and are fully entitled to take examinations. You can obtain a degree at TU Dortmund University as a second listener. Second listeners may be enrolled in a maximum of one degree program with admission restrictions, regardless of whether it is at the first or second university. Furthermore, the degree programs at the first and second universities must not have the same name. The formal procedure differs between admission-free and admission-restricted study programs.

  • For degree programs or subjects without admission restrictions, you can enroll directly via our online enrollment through the TU Dortmund campus portal during the enrollment deadlines for the first or higher subject semester.
  • Enrollment in the first semester (exception: Bachelor of Computer Science) in degree programs or subjects without admission restrictions is only possible for the winter semester. After completing the online enrollment via the campus portal, you can indicate at the end of the process on the "Registration for enrollment" that you would like to study at TU Dortmund University as a second listener.
  • In some subjects, additional requirements (aptitude test, language test, internships, etc.) must be met and proven for enrollment. Here you will find an overview of the enrollment requirements.
  • Only when you have sent us the complete enrollment documents, including the certificate of enrollment from your first university, and the secondary listener fee has been received, is your admission as a secondary listener complete.
  • For degree programs or subjects with restricted admission, you can apply for the first subject semester for the winter semester in the campus portal. Please note that for 1-subject Bachelor's degree programs with restricted admission, prior registration on Hochschulstart is required. This does not apply to teacher training programs. No admission procedures are carried out for the summer semester.
  • In some subjects, additional requirements (aptitude test, language test, internships, etc.) must be met and proven for enrollment. Here you will find an overview of the enrollment requirements.
  • Only when you receive a notification of admission (usually from mid-August), you can enroll in the corresponding study program within the deadline specified in the notification. In addition to the signed application for enrollment, you must submit an officially certified copy of your university entrance qualification (usually the Abitur certificate), proof that you meet the enrollment requirements, if applicable, and a certificate of enrollment from your first university. Furthermore, we require proof that your course of study at your first university is not subject to admission restrictions.
  • The application for a higher semester also takes place in the campus portal. Here you can find more information about the application process.
  • The application deadline for the winter semester is September 15, for the summer semester March 15.
  • Entry into a higher semester requires sufficient academic qualifications for placement to occur. Here you can find more information about entering a higher semester.
  • Only when you receive a notification of admission (usually sent shortly before the start of lectures) can you enroll in the corresponding course of study within the deadline specified in the notification. In addition to the signed application for enrollment, you must submit your university entrance qualification (usually the Abitur certificate) as an officially certified copy, proof of fulfillment of the enrollment requirements, if applicable, and a certificate of enrollment from your first university. Furthermore, we require proof that your course of study at your first university is not subject to admission restrictions.

The small second listener

In contrast to the great second listener, the small second listener  is not fully entitled to take examinations and can be admitted to a course of study with the same name. The admission refers to individual specific courses. It must therefore be proven that the corresponding course is not offered at the first university in the intended semester. The status of a small second listener only entitles the student to attend and take the examination for this course.

In order to be admitted to the TU Dortmund University as a small second listener, you must submit a corresponding application for admission. This application is valid for all interested "small second listeners" regardless of whether you would like to study in the first or in a higher semester, in a degree program with open admission or in a degree program with restricted admission. Please contact us via e-mail at studierendensekretariattu-dortmundde. We will then send you the application digitally.

The following documents must be submitted with the completed application:

  • an officially certified copy of your university entrance qualification (usually the Abitur certificate)
  • a current certificate of enrollment from your first university (for the semester applied for at the TU Dortmund)
  • Proof that the selected course at TU Dortmund University is not offered at the first university in the semester you are applying for (by means of a confirmation of the responsible faculty or the responsible examination board of the first university)
  • A proof of the payment of the second listener fee

After the application has been reviewed, you will receive an ID card for small secondary students indicating the course for which you have applied.

Please coordinate the registration for the required examinations directly with the lecturer/examiner.
