The new issue of TU Dortmund University’s science magazine is now available. In this “mundo,” everything revolves around one central topic of our time: transformation. It permeates all areas of life – technology and the economy, the environment and society, as well as personal experience. Through their work, researchers at TU Dortmund University help to understand, accompany, advance, and actively shape transformations. Eight compelling articles on topics such as digitalization, the climate crisis, and social conflicts illustrate how the researchers investigate complex interrelationships, design future scenarios, and develop practical solutions to make knowledge effective in society.

For example, Prof. Christian Wietfeld and his team are researching the future of digital infrastructure: the 6G mobile communications standard will open up new possibilities for more intelligent, faster, and more sustainable systems. Prof. Alice Kirchheim and Prof. Michael Henke examine how blockchain technologies can redefine trust in global supply chains – from raw materials to the retail shelf. Prof. Manuel Wiesche, one of the most research‑active economists of his generation, focuses on the digital transformation of the economy and shows how organizations can use change strategically. Prof. Anna Isaeva, in turn, conducts basic research on novel semiconductor materials with the aim of reducing the energy consumption of IT technology in the future.

However, transformation also has social and cultural dimensions. Researchers in spatial planning are searching for ways to make Europe more climate‑resilient – using new concepts that also incorporate private land. Sociologist Prof. Bernd Sommer explains why the “Green Transition” triggers conflicts and how societies can deal with them. Prof. Barbara Welzel and Prof. Wolfgang Sonne show how the repurposing of church buildings can foster new forms of community. In conversation with Prof. Katja Crone, it becomes clear that transformation affects every individual personally, for example when it comes to decisions, new beginnings, and experiences that fundamentally change one’s own life.

Ruhr Innovation Lab: For a Future‑Ready Society

TU Dortmund University and Ruhr University Bochum, currently competing in the Excellence Strategy as the Ruhr Innovation Lab, aim to generate even greater impact together in the future and to develop even more targeted solutions from science for a sustainable and future‑ready society. True to the motto: Think. Try. Transform.
