Overview

Business mathematicians apply mathematical methods to economic problems. The Business Mathematics program consists of mathematics, economics, and computer science.

This program is offered jointly by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Business and Economics. The initial phase of the program imparts the fundamental mathematical content and methods in the areas of analysis and linear algebra, as well as computer science. Later on, elements of numeric, optimization, and stochastics are added from the mathematical side, together with studies in business operations, economics, and other (business) mathematical and economic fields. Beginning with the second year of study, introductory software courses are offered in part as block courses (1-2 weeks) during lecture-free periods. The Bachelor's thesis can be written in either mathematics or business and economics.

The Bachelor’s degree program in Business Mathematics leads to an initial professional qualification. Furthermore, it prepares the graduate to pursue a Master’s degree in Business Mathematics or a related field.

Skills and knowledge

The Bachelor’s degree program in Business Mathematics is aimed at high school graduates who are mathematically talented and are interested in business and economics.

In order to be able to better assess your own knowledge of mathematics before starting your studies, you can take an online placement test, for example here (German only).

Those who take such a test early on and thus make an early assessment of their own level of knowledge can, up until the actual start of their studies, work through any problems and gaps revealed by the test, repeat topics, or continue training in the mathematical tools.

It is recommended that students take the preparatory course in mathematics, which repeats material previously covered in school while providing the first experiences with working and living at the university (lectures in the auditorium, accompanying exercises in small groups). The Department of Mathematics usually offers such a three-week preparatory course starting at the end of August or early September.

The Bachelor’s degree program is not subject to admission restrictions.

Field of activity

Business mathematicians work at banks and insurance companies, investment companies, consulting firms (management consulting), and in the computer business and other industries, as well as at universities and research institutes. Besides research, fields of employment include systems analysis, organization, planning, investment and financing, risk analysis and management, and supervision of corporate accounting. The wide range of application fields and dynamic developments in certain areas (for example, in the financial sector) lead to favorable career prospects.
