Overview

The English-language Master’s degree program in Econometrics is offered jointly by the UA Ruhr Universities: TU Dortmund University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and the University of Duisburg-Essen (Essen campus). It combines the expertise of the three participating business departments in empirical economic research and economics with the methodologically oriented training in statistics and econometrics at Dortmund. This bundling of educational and research competences enables a specialized curriculum covering a wide range of topics in econometrics and economics.

Econometrics is a branch of economics and deals with the quantitative analysis of economic relationships using mathematical-statistical methods. These methods are used in many areas of economic research and are the basis for empirical applications in prominent disciplines such as labor and financial market economics. The application of econometric methods gains increasing significance as a key to decision support for corporations, governments, financial institutions, and other organizations.

Skills and knowledge

Prerequisite for the Master’s degree program is proof of a Bachelor’s degree in statistics, economics, mathematics, or a comparable field with a total of at least 180 ECTS credits. The Bachelor’s degree must have been achieved with at least a final grade of „2.7“. In addition, at least 15 ECTS credits are required in the area of economics and at least 25 ECTS credits are required in the area of mathematics, statistics, econometrics and empirical economic research. Moreover, an average grade of at least 3.0 must have been achieved in the modules corresponding to the area of mathematics, statistics, econometrics and empirical economic research. The examination board can request stipulations for incomplete prerequisites.

Applicants must demonstrate English language skills of at least level B2 CEFR, for example through a German Abitur certificate or an internationally recognized language certificate.

Applicants must submit an academic curriculum vitae in electronic form with a maximum length of three pages. During the application period, applicants can fill in the questionnaire in our online form and download it as a PDF file to generate an academic CV. Moreover, every applicant has to complete a self-assessment. This assessment is not a test that can be failed: The aim is for the applicants to assess and reflect on their knowledge of statistics, economics, and econometrics. Based on the results, the applicants can decide whether the Master’s degree program Econometrics is right for them and if they should take specific preliminary courses.

The self-assessment can be downloaded here (PDF). Please click here to submit your self-assessment. For more information, please visit the website of the department and the program website
