Joint professorships
Through joint professorships, TU Dortmund University works closely with local and national research institutions and promotes scientific exchange between the university and research institutes. Joint appointments and co-optations with associated institutes and affiliated institutes strengthen the networking of university and non-university research in Dortmund and thus contribute to a lively research landscape.

Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology (MPI)
Two directors of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology (MPI) are associated with TU Dortmund University: Prof. Philippe Bastiaens (Systems Biology) and apl. Prof. Stefan Raunser (Structural Biochemistry) are both members of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML)
The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) is headed by three professors from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU Dortmund University: Prof. Michael Henke (Enterprise Logistics), Prof. Uwe Clausen (Transport Logistics) and Prof. Alice Kirchheim (Materials Handling and Storage).
Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISST)
The Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISST) is linked to TU Dortmund University by two professorships: ISST Director Prof. Boris Otto is Professor of Industrial Information Management at TU Dortmund University's Department of Mechanical Engineering. In addition, Prof. Falk Howar (Automated Quality Assurance) from the Department of Computer Science is responsible for coordinating research in the field of software engineering at ISST.
Leibniz Institute for Labor Research at TU Dortmund University (IfADo)
The four scientific directors of the Leibniz Institute for Occupational Research at TU Dortmund University (IfADo) have been appointed to TU Dortmund University via the “Jülich Model” and have now been co-opted to various departments. Prof. Jan Hengstler (Head of the Toxicology Research Area) and Prof. Carsten Watzl (Head of the Immunology Research Area) have been co-opted to the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Prof. Edmund Wascher (Head of the Ergonomics Research Area) and Prof. Michael Nitsche (Head of the Psychology and Neurosciences Research Area) are co-opted to the Department of Educational Sciences and Psychology.
Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
Assistant Professor Lena Hünefeld (Research Unit Work, Inclusion and Technology) from the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences is Deputy Head of Unit 1.2 “Monitoring Working Conditions” at the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA).

Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), Bonn
The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) and TU Dortmund University have established a joint junior professorship in the field of continuing education research. Assistant Professor Laura Naegele (Employment and Education in Old Age) from the Department of Social Sciences has headed the junior research group “Company Competence Management of Older Employees in Digitalized Learning Environments (BeKomIng Digital)” at BIBB since 2022.
German Youth Institute (DJI), Munich
The German Youth Institute (DJI) and TU Dortmund University have been working together in a joint research partnership since 2002. Prof. Jens Pothmann is head of the Youth and Youth Welfare Department at the DJI. He is co-opted to the Department of Educational Sciences and Psychology at TU Dortmund University.
Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB)
The Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB) is linked to TU Dortmund University via one professorship: Prof. Adolfo Vélez Saiz (Experimental Accelerator Physics) from the Department of Physics is involved in the research group on the VSR Demo project at the Institute “Science and Technology of Accelerating Systems” there.
