The Master's degree program MAREPOL will henceforth be offered in English.

The Master's degree program Religion, Ethics and Politics (MAREPOL) will be offered in English from the Winter semester 2022/23. Junior professor Matthias Kortmann, who is responsible for the program, explains the background and why the degree program is interesting for international students.

Why is MAREPOL going to be offered in English from the coming winter semester?

The tense relationship between religion and politics is one of the most important global social issues of our time. International research is also dealing intensively with this complex of topics. By offering MAREPOL in English in the future, we respond to this development in research.

At the same time, it is a further step in the internationalization strategy of the Department of Humanities and Theology. We already have numerous contacts with foreign universities on the level of research cooperation and faculty exchange. The English-language MAREPOL offers the opportunity to intensify our contacts in the area of student exchange as well.

What is the degree program about?

MAREPOL examines the relationship between religion, politics, and society from theological, philosophical, and political science perspectives. Students learn to address and understand the interaction between these spheres as well as the challenges that result from this complex field of tension and to develop interdisciplinary solutions. In doing so, they deal with the ethics and aesthetics of religions, analyze the relationship between religion and state in political systems, or discuss theological justifications for the political engagement of religious communities.

What makes the degree program interesting for international students?

Since the relationship between religion and politics is highly relevant in all global regions, the knowledge and skills gained in the program can be applied in various international contexts. Therefore, MAREPOL prepares students excellently for national and international professional fields, for instance in research and teaching, political management, political or economic consulting, consulting, international cooperation and diplomacy, political education or in associations, publishing houses and foundations. In addition, we offer international students special intra-departmental support, which complements the services of the International Office.
