This year, the Global Gallery once again presented international projects from a variety of disciplines and status groups at TU Dortmund University and made the diverse international activities in research, teaching, and social engagement visible. The projects on display are best-practice examples that underscore TU Dortmund University’s openness as well as its international and intercultural orientation, emphasized Thomas Oeldemann, Executive Assistant to the Vice President International Affairs, in his welcome at the International Meeting Center (IBZ). “The Global Gallery vividly demonstrates how diverse international cooperation already is at TU Dortmund University. The event also enables an exchange among researchers, students, and members of the administration,” said Dr. Barbara Schneider, head of the International Office. During a Gallery Walk, the many guests had the opportunity to learn about the 25 projects, to enter into conversation with the project participants and other visitors, and to cast two votes each for their favorites.
Virtual Reality in Teaching
The project that received the most votes of the evening was ChemSPARK: Cognitive Maps in VR Learning from the Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering and the Center for Higher Education (zhb). The project combines virtual reality with innovative teaching methods to foster understanding of complex engineering processes. In a virtual learning environment, students can explore a sustainable production of ammonia and trace the dynamic interrelationships of technical systems. International perspectives from the University of Oxford are incorporated into the development of the project.
Urban Development in Finland
The second prize was awarded to a team from the Research Group Urban Development, Land Use Planning and Design Processes at the Department of Spatial Planning for the project Places2Be Hamina. As part of an international master’s project, students worked together with young people in the Finnish town of Hamina to develop concepts for youth-friendly urban development. To this end, the students carried out participation processes at schools as well as with the local youth parliament. The results were incorporated directly into a so-called Youth Master Plan, which outlines new perspectives for urban development in Hamina.
Educational Platform for Human Rights
Third place went to the Transformative Justice Institute at the Institute of Philosophy and Political Science. The initiative defines itself as an international platform for human rights education, applied research, and exchange between academia and civil society. Through workshops, training sessions, and international networking opportunities, the project supports activists, educational stakeholders, and organizations in using the foundations of human rights and international law in practice, and in promoting processes of societal change.
Internationalization at TU Dortmund University
The numerous joint projects in research and teaching with universities all over the world contribute to internationalization at TU Dortmund University. With its international cooperations, strategic partnerships, and worldwide networks, the university is strengthening its international visibility in research and teaching. Thanks to a growing offer of English-language teaching and degree programs, it is also attractive to international students. New initiatives such as the Ruhr Innovation Lab, in which TU Dortmund University and Ruhr University Bochum have joined forces as part of the Excellence Strategy, likewise benefit from lively international exchange and further drive it forward.
