Prof. Eike Kiltz and Prof. Christoph Paar are guests on the sixth episode of the “Think.Try.Transform.” podcast.
The visionary idea of a business leader sparked the rise of Bochum as an IT security hotspot around the turn of the millennium. Just over 20 years later, globally sought-after specialists in cybersecurity are working at Ruhr University Bochum. They collaborate in the Cluster of Excellence CASA, the only Cluster of Excellence in cybersecurity in Germany, which entered its second funding phase in January. In the podcast, the researchers Prof. Eike Kiltz and Prof. Christof Paar explain what makes IT security research in Bochum so successful and what lies ahead for the cluster in the coming years.

It all began in the early 2000s with two endowed professorships in IT security at Ruhr University Bochum. Since then, the university has developed into an internationally renowned hotspot for cybersecurity and cryptography, where researchers from computer science, psychology, and engineering collaborate across disciplines. At the center of this research area is the Cluster of Excellence CASA – Securing the Digital Society. CASA pursues the clear goal of ensuring that the digital world is sustainably more secure and developing effective solutions against powerful cyber attackers. Alongside artificial intelligence, this forms one of the two central pillars of the research focal area “Resilient Digital Society” at the Ruhr Innovation Lab, with which Ruhr University Bochum and TU Dortmund University are jointly competing in the Excellence Strategy.

In the new episode of “Think.Try.Transform.”, CASA researchers Prof. Eike Kiltz and Prof. Christof Paar discuss how Ruhr University Bochum became a hotspot for IT security and in which devices and applications encryption technology developed in Bochum is used. One thing is certain: the field of research is anything but dull. Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and ever-new forms of cyberattacks continue to pose new challenges for researchers. The podcast also explains why the human factor plays such an important role in IT security, what quantum computers may be capable of in the future, and how it has been possible to attract so many leading international researchers to the Ruhr area.

About the Podcast

The podcast “Think. Try. Transform.” showcases major ideas behind the joint application of Ruhr University Bochum and TU Dortmund University as university consortium of excellence and discusses them with those who know best: Rectors, researchers, founders and advisors. Hosted by Sven-Daniel Gettys, each episode covers topics such as clusters of excellence, support for doctoral candidates, and start-up activities. Under the lead of Ruhr University Bochum, new episodes are released monthly—accompanying the application phase until the announcement on October 2. Most of the episodes are in German.

In June, there will be a special episode featuring audience questions for the two rectors, Prof. Manfred Bayer and Prof. Martin Paul. Questions can be submitted until May 31 via email to: hochschulkommunikation@ruhr-uni-bochum.de.
