TU Dortmund University is looking for further start-ups that its new subsidiary, TU capital, can support with venture capital. To help young, technology-based companies to establish themselves, the university founded TU capital GmbH & Co. KG and set up a venture capital fund at the end of last year. The aim is to help spin-offs or start-ups directly connected to TU Dortmund University get off to a flying start. QuizCo, a provider of individualizable learning platforms, recently became the first start-up to receive support in the shape of early-stage finance.

TU capital’s objective is to increase the number of successful start-ups in Dortmund. They not only receive venture capital but are also given active assistance during market entry and, in addition to coaching, access to a broad network of regional companies. Here, the venture capitalists are working closely with the Center for Entrepreneurship & Transfer (CET) at TU Dortmund University, which was awarded the title of Excellence Start-up Center by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and offers various programs for start-ups and potential entrepreneurs. TU capital received initial finance from TU Dortmund University but has already raised further capital from local investors and companies in the region. The intention is for further investors and venture capitalists to join the venture capital fund in the future.

QuizCo is the first beneficiary

Together with Seed Capital Dortmund (Dortmund Savings Bank) and techx Dortmund, the first funds were recently invested in QuizCo GmbH, a new tenant at TechnologieZentrumDortmund. The start-up wants to individualize learning in companies and organizations and make a unique learning experience possible through individual contents because, as it says, although online platforms with ready-made learning content are increasingly coming onto the market in the course of the digital transformation, they rarely take into account users’ different needs. Thanks to artificial intelligence, which analyzes selected texts and creates content automatically, the learning experience in QuizCo applications can be customized to the respective companies and users.

Albrecht Ehlers, Chancellor of TU Dortmund University, says: “By establishing TU capital, TU Dortmund University has created another important building block for supporting spin-offs and start-ups. In so doing, we’re making a contribution to Dortmund as a business location.” Start-ups connected to TU Dortmund University that are interested in early-stage finance can contact TU capital with a pitch deck.
