Chemical Biology
Summary
Master of Science (M.Sc.)
4 semesters
Winter semester
Summer semester
English
What is it about?
How can I visualize and study individual molecules or their effects in living cells?
Why do biochemical reactions in cells occur at the right time and in the right place?
How can I use chemical methods to specifically investigate and modify biological processes?
Interest sparked?
In this degree program, students work with topics such as:
- main focus: chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, molecular cell biology
- chemistry subjects: inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry
- laboratory internships (advanced and in-depth internships) in all major subjects
- bioanalytics and structural elucidation of small molecules, proteins, and protein complexes
- interdisciplinary theses with current research relevance
Why study Chemical Biology?

„What fascinates me most about Chemical Biology is gaining an understanding of how drugs work at a molecular level and how they can be used to specifically influence biological processes. The Master’s program is highly practical and provides excellent preparation for a career in scientific research.“
How do I get into the Master's program?
To gain admission and enroll in a Master’s degree program, applicants must meet the required access criteria.
Students apply and enroll through the Campusportal. Deadlines vary depending on the according Master’s degree program.
If you are an international applicant, please make sure to check the deadlines and application requirements provided by the International Office.
What can I expect during my studies?
The program is organized into a series of modules designed to build on one another throughout your studies. Students are encouraged to follow the recommended study plan, which outlines the modules assigned to each semester.
The structure of each module can be reviewed in the module manual. It provides detailed information on all modules offered within the degree program, including course content, examination formats and requirements, as well as requirements for participation.
The following specializations are offered in this Master's degree program:
- Chemical Biology
- Medicinal Chemistry
- Molecular Cell Biology

What’s next after graduation?

I work, e.g.,
- in the pharmaceutical industry: research and development of new drugs, therapies, and diagnostics
- in the molecular biotechnology: development and production of biotechnological products, processes, and biosensors
- in the food and cosmetics industry: quality control, safety testing, innovative active ingredients, and product development
- in the biomedical analysis and basic research: research institutes, universities, and laboratories
- in the project management, approval procedures, and patent matters in industry or consulting
I work as, e.g.,
- chemical biologist
- quality manager
- scientist
- product manager
- project manager
