Why study Teacher Training English?

„What I especially like about my studies here is the passion with which such a wide range of topics is explored. I've been able to engage with many (inter-)cultural perspectives and have continually discovered new interests and fascinations along the way.“

„I love studying the subject English because I'm fascinated by how language and culture are interconnected. At TU Dortmund University, the wide variety of seminars really brings the program to life.“
How do I get into the Master’s program?
To enroll in the Master of Education degree program, you need to have completed a Bachelor’s degree in teacher education – ideally from TU Dortmund University – or an equivalent degree from a comparable degree program of at least three years (six semesters).
Please note: The Master of Education can generally only be pursued in the same teaching field in which the Bachelor’s degree was earned.
For students who obtained their Bachelor’s degree at another university, an equivalence assessment will be conducted to determine whether the degree corresponds to the relevant bachelor’s program offered at TU Dortmund University.
Details regarding the access requirements for teacher education programs are specified in the examination regulations.

Students apply and enroll through the Campusportal.
If you are an international applicant, please make sure to check the deadlines and application requirements provided by the International Office.
What can I expect during my studies?
The program is organized into a series of modules designed to build on one another throughout your studies. Students are encouraged to follow the recommended study plan, which outlines the modules assigned to each semester.
The structure of each module can be reviewed in the module manual. It provides detailed information on all modules offered within the degree program, including course content, examination formats and requirements, as well as requirements for participation.
Students who did their B.A. studies at a university outside of NRW may need to make up the 12-week Stay Abroad in an English-speaking country.
In the Master of Education degree program, students complete an internship semester consisting of:
- a five‑month school internship (20 weeks)
- It is recommended to prepare for this internship during the first master’s semester and complete it in the second semester.
During the internship semester, students gain deep insights into everyday school life and connect their theoretical knowledge with hands‑on experience. The internship is prepared and supervised at three learning sites: the university, the Center for Practical Teacher Training, and the school.

What’s next after graduation?
The Master of Education prepares graduates for a career as teachers within the school system. Job prospects vary depending on the type of school and teaching subjects. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Ministry of School and Education regularly publishes forecasts regarding teacher employment needs. These projections, however, are influenced by various factors—such as changes in class sizes, adjustments to retirement age, and other policy developments—and may change at short notice.
Therefore, predicted employment opportunities should never be the only factor guiding your choice of subjects. Your genuine interest in each subject should remain the key consideration when planning your studies.
Recruitment opportunities NRW (German only)
After completing the Master of Education, most graduates continue into the preparatory teaching internship (Referendariat). In addition, a wide range of other career options is available.
The Career Service at TU Dortmund University helps students and graduates explore professional opportunities, develop their career profiles, gain practical experience, connect with employers, and build effective strategies for entering the workforce.
