TU Dortmund University's Counseling Services for Students Who Are Unsure About Their Studies

There are many ways to talk about doubts about your studies. Why is it worth talking to the academic advising office if you have doubts about your studies? Because you’ll be able to reflect on your situation in a structured way, thoroughly explore your options, and work together to develop new paths for your future—confidentially, objectively, and with professional expertise.

Talking with friends and family is an important part of (re)orientation. In addition, it can be helpful to talk to experts about your own situation. Below you will find a comparison based on specific criteria.

General Academic Advising

  • Provides guidance and advice on fundamental questions regarding choosing a major, organizing your studies, or making decisions.

Psychological Counseling

  • Supports you with mental health challenges related to your studies, such as stress, test anxiety, motivation issues, or personal crises.

Program-Specific Advising

  • Provides subject-specific advice on the content, structure, and requirements of a specific degree program.

Career Counseling

  • Gives you an overview of the job market and supports you in making a potential transition to an apprenticeship.
  • Visit the walk-in consultation hours (no appointment needed) or schedule an individual appointment outside of office hours
  • Non-judgmental counseling regarding your individual situation or concern
  • Structured discussion and organization of your individual situation
  • Arrange follow-up appointments as needed
