Real Insights into a Career in Science

“My Path—Your Opportunity” once again highlights just how valuable direct interactions with scientists are for young people’s career planning and how diverse the paths into research can be.

To begin, the Graduate Center presented key information about entering academia and the topic of doctoral studies. Among other things, the session addressed questions such as: What steps lead to an academic career? What opportunities does a doctorate offer? And how can students set the course for a career in research while still in college?

During the subsequent speed-dating session in breakout rooms, participants had the opportunity to speak directly with the three researchers. These role models from the fields of spatial planning, psychology, and educational sciences spoke openly about their personal career paths, challenges, and experiences within the academic system.

Participants particularly highlighted the diversity of the represented disciplines as well as the personal exchanges in the small groups. Many students found the conversations very enriching and took the opportunity to ask questions about planning an academic career as well as about career and future prospects in academia. At the same time, the high level of interest also showed that the 15 minutes allotted for each discussion round were almost too short—the students would have liked to ask even more questions.
