The irresponsible attack on Ukraine, ordered by the Russian president on 24 February, has left us all severely shaken and stunned. It clearly contradicts the values of TU Dortmund University, which is committed to a free and peaceful coexistence of all people in the spirit of Europe. We therefore strongly condemn the ruthless attack on Ukraine – a sovereign and democratic state.

TU Dortmund University stands in solidarity with the victims and those affected by this conflict, as well as with all those who are committed to peace and democracy. At our university, we also want to welcome people who are now fleeing from the crisis area to Germany. We would like to assure all Ukrainian as well as Russian students at TU Dortmund University of rapid assistance whenever they need it. TU Dortmund University as well as Studierendenwerk Dortmund and the Association of Friends of TU Dortmund University (Gesellschaft der Freunde, GdF) offer support services. The GdF has set up a relief fund and is accepting donations under the purpose “Studierenden in Ukrainekrise helfen / Helping students in the Ukraine crisis”.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the war of aggression will affect our everyday life in Germany and the European Union, but also the international cooperation of science for an indefinite period of time. The conflict threatens scientific cooperation projects with Eastern Europe, which have been established over many years in trustful collaboration, and especially affects the involved partners in Ukraine and Russia. In an open letter at the end of February, numerous Russian scientists have already spoken out against the unjustified war of aggression. This courageous statement deserves the highest respect.

In times like these, it is a small ray of hope to see people moving even closer together. Let us continue to treat each other openly and fairly also at TU Dortmund University, whose community includes many students and employees from Ukraine and Russia, and not allow the terrible events in Eastern Europe to divide us.
