Anyone entering the Central Library will quickly notice that something has changed on the first floor: Where the newspaper reading room used to be, there is now the high-tech MakerSpace, which is open to all students at TU Dortmund University. They can put their creative ideas into practice here – whether they want to record a podcast, film a video in front of a green screen or apply their own patterns to fabrics using a programmable embroidery machine. Eight 3D printers are available for students to produce their own shapes and designs. With a special scanner, objects can be scanned directly in 3D. A wide variety of materials, such as wood, felt or acrylic sheets, can be engraved or cut to size with the laser cutter. Students can also craft things with soldering irons and other tools.
The new MakerSpace is part of the new HyLeC, which is run jointly by the University Library, Engineering Education, Computer Graphics, and Motor and Physical Development in Rehabilitation and Education. The HyLeC combines physical and virtual resources, rooms and consulting. Hybrid workshops are therefore also offered in the MakerSpace, for example on how to operate the 3D printers. “Students can join in both here on site as well as from home,” explains Silke Frye from Engineering Education.
