Digital Week Dortmund (#diwodo) will take place for the ninth time from 1 to 6 September. The slogan this year is “Innovations from the Neighborhood”, and close to 170 events, workshops, presentations and conferences around the topic of digitalization will be offered throughout Dortmund over the six days. Institutions at TU Dortmund University are also participating in the very varied program.

Chair of Digital Transformation: Augmented Reality Research and Data Sovereignty in the Smart Home

This workshop, run by researchers from the Chair of Digital Transformation at the Department of Business and Economics, gives participants a hands-on opportunity to experience innovative technologies: With iPad and flowAR app, they can design, build and plant a garden of the future with the help of augmented reality.

The “Smart Home” part of the exhibition highlights the field of tension between comfort and control, with a focus on the central question of data sovereignty: How can we utilize the advantages of a networked home without relinquishing control of our personal data?

Department of Computer Science: Lab Tour Featuring TU Dortmund University’s Computer Science

Technology enthusiasts can experience the future of autonomous systems at TU Dortmund University during a lab tour  through the Department of Computer Science. Autonomous vehicles, virtual humans, and intelligent machines: today’s computer science is stepping beyond the screen and into the physical world.

The event begins with an introductory lecture by Prof. Mario Botsch on the topic: Realistic Virtual Human Models: Creation, Simulation, and Applications. The lecture demonstrates how realistic virtual humans can be created through 3D scanning, how these virtual models can be animated and simulated, and presents interesting applications from current projects.

Lamarr Institute: Social Responsibility, Sustainability and Innovation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

How can we use AI in concrete applications to overcome existing challenges in the Ruhr region? What opportunities does it offer for sustainable development, social justice and innovation – and where do the risks lie? To explore these and other questions, the Young AI Leaders Community Dortmund and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence invite visitors to join a practice-oriented workshop. The workshop is intended for all those who would like to learn more about the social impact and responsible use of AI or about Dortmund’s growing AI landscape. No prior knowledge is required.

The program organized by the Department of Computer Science will take place parallel to the workshop and in the same building. All participants will have the opportunity to gain further insights into the topic after the workshop.

Graduate School of Logistics: Fostering Data Culture

In this interactive workshop, participants will get to grips with the topic of data culture and learn how they can foster a sustainable, data-oriented culture in their own organizations. In group work and discussions, participants will together identify which characteristics define their current data culture and which ones reinforce it in their own organization. The aim is to raise awareness toward the importance of a strong data culture as well as for the participants to reflect on their own starting position and identify concrete, future-proof measures suitable for further development. The Graduate School of Logistics at TU Dortmund University is responsible for organizing the workshop.

CET: AI and Data in SMEs

A lecture given by staff from the Center for Entrepreneurship and Transfer (CET) will explore the reasons why small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should work with data and why data- or AI-based projects nevertheless often fail. Dr. Eugen Krebs, Dr. Andreas Becker and Sebastian Ostapiuk will present concrete examples and best practices tailored to the needs of SMEs.

Journalism: SciCAR Conference Networks Science and Data Journalism

The Institute of Journalism is extending an invitation to the SciCAR conference on 5 September, which will bring together journalists and scientists to initiate collaborative projects in the area of computer-assisted reporting (CAR) and foster interdisciplinary exchange. Keynote speeches, panel discussions and workshops will examine, among other topics, research on the energy transition and political trends, AI tools and data sources.
