Saving Electricity
Electricity is being saved in many places on campus, for example in exterior lighting. The employees of TU Dortmund University are also called upon to save energy: With a few simple measures, a lot can be achieved together.
Lighting dimmed

From 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., outdoor lighting on the campus and parking lots has been reduced to one-third.
Less ambience

The fountain on Martin-Schmeißer-Platz was switched off in summer 2021 and since then has only been switched on for special occasions.
CO2 Controlled

In the lecture halls of the HGII and the Audimax, the supply of fresh air is now regulated automatically. It is measured by how much CO2 is present in the room air. This means that the ventilation system increases or decreases depending on the room occupancy instead of remaining in continuous operation. Depending on the auditorium, this saves 25 % to 75 % electricity.
No air conditioners

Do not use air conditioners in the summer. Instead, shade the windows and ventilate rooms in the morning hours.
No fan heaters

Do not use fan heaters in winter. This is not only exceedingly expensive, but could also overload the power grid.
Step by step

Take the stairs instead of riding the elevator. Not only will this save electricity, but you will also be doing something good for your health.
Turning off devices

Please turn off devices when you no longer need them. Avoid standby operation and use disconnectable power strips whenever possible.
Lights off

Please turn off the lights when you leave the room.
Tea kitchens

Also take advantage of the savings potential in the tea kitchens, for example by turning refrigerators off or down, descaling kettles and running the dishwasher in ecomode.
Wash hands with cold water

If possible, wash your hands with cold water. This way, no additional energy is needed to heat the water.
Measure power consumption

Identify power guzzlers in your areas. The Sustainability Office, in cooperation with the University Library, lends electricity meters to employees of TU Dortmund University for this purpose. During service hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., you can borrow an electricity meter in the Emil-Figge-Library.
Power strips

A power strip with a toggle switch can be used to unplug devices. The savings can be quite high enough to pay off the initial cost within a year. Do the math in the Service Portal.
