Saving energy at TU Dortmund University
TU Dortmund University is a major energy consumer, requiring as much electricity and heat as several thousand single-family homes. It is a joint task of all TU members to keep the energy demand as low as possible. The university also aims to produce more green energy on campus.
The past two years demonstrated how it is possible to save energy together: Extensive measures, some of which were governed by the federal energy saving ordinance (EnSikuMaV) in the winter of 2022/23, resulted in savings of around 25% (2022) and 35% (2023) in thermal energy. Electricity consumption was reduced by 19% in the previous year. Energy should continue to be saved in order to avoid CO2 emissions and curb the additional costs for energy in the millions.
The university’s environmental balance is positively impacted by the fact that green electricity is purchased and heat as well as electricity are generated highly efficiently in the university’s own combined heat and power plants. The university aims to generate significantly more energy from renewable sources in the future and is planning a ground-mounted photovoltaic system, a wood pellet heating system, and a wind turbine.
