In 2004, Prof. Christian Bühler was appointed as professor of Rehabilitation Technology in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences.
For his many years of extraordinary work on a national and international level in the field of assistive technologies for people with impairments, the “Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe” (AAATE) has awarded Prof. Christian Bühler of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences with the AAATE Diamond Award. The association bestows the award on individuals who have made outstanding contributions over a long period of time to the field in Europe.

In its congratulatory speech, the AAATE Board of Directors praised the extraordinary dedication of the professor of Rehabilitation Technology as well as his achievements as a researcher, international networker and his contributions to European cooperation over a period of more than 30 years. Among his many contributions, Prof. Bühler played a key role in the EU study “Horizontal European Activities in Rehabilitation Technology” (HEART), which is still an important source of information for rehabilitation technologists today. The board also highlighted his active role in the establishing and work of AAATE and the Global Alliance of Assistive Technology Organizations (GAATO).

In his work, Prof. Christian Bühler focuses on how accessibility, participation and inclusion can be facilitated for people with disabilities with the help of technology. At the award ceremony in Paris, he appealed to his fellow participants to pursue their common goal of promoting the use of assistive technology for people with disabilities all over the world.

About Prof. Christian Bühler

Prof. Bühler received his doctorate in control engineering, robotics and nonlinear systems from TU Dortmund University in 1989. In 1991 he established the Research Institute for Technology and Disability FTB (today: “Kompetenzzentrum Barrierefreiheit Volmarstein”) and from 1993 represented Germany in the committees of the EU program “Technology initiative for disabled and elderly people (TIDE)”. From 2000 to 2001, Prof. Bühler also directed AAATE as a board member and president himself as well as signed the Tokushima Agreement, which established the foundation for GAATO. In 2004, he was appointed as professor of Rehabilitation Technology in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at TU Dortmund University. In 2018, Prof. Bühler received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his outstanding contributions for inclusion.
