Together with five other universities from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), TU Dortmund University opened a liaison office in Ghana's capital Accra on 18 July. Dr. Beatrice Asenso Barnieh, Head of the Ghana-NRW University Alliance Office in Accra (front row, third person from the left), and representatives of the participating universities celebrated the grand opening.

The University of Cologne is the consortium leader for the new liaison office. In addition to TU Dortmund University, the other members are the University of Duisburg-Essen, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and the University of Siegen. Their newly established liaison office is located on the premises of the Goethe-Institut in the Ghanaian capital Accra. The opening ceremony took place during a reception at the residence of the German ambassador in Accra, to which long-time partners from Ghana as well as numerous guests from the Ghanaian scientific community were invited.

The liaison office aims to improve the partnerships and visibility of the universities in Ghana, regarding both student recruitment and research cooperation. The consortium partners agreed to fund the office for a period of three years for a start. Dr. Beatrice Asenso Barnieh has assumed management of the office in Accra. She has excellent contacts in the Ghanaian university and research landscape. The geoscientist herself is from Ghana and, as part of her research stays and studying abroad, she has lived in Germany, the Netherlands and China, among other places, for several years.

TU's cooperation with Ghanaian universities

TU Dortmund University already has contacts and relationships in Ghana in form of university partnerships: The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is one of the five partner universities for the international Master Spatial Planning for Regions in Growing Economies (SPRING) of the Department of Spatial Planning. In addition, the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences has a partnership with the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). Prof. Tessa Flatten, Vice President International Affairs, was delighted by the opening of the liaison office and stated: "The region of West Africa, and Ghana in particular, offers enormous potential in regard to collaboration in research and attracting excellent students. The liaison office will help support and strengthen existing partnerships as well as initiate new promising contacts."
