So far, over two semesters, around 160 students have signed up for the new additional qualification. On top of that, ten departments are participating by providing 30-40 classes every semester. This semester, the university will already see its first group of graduates of the course. Patrick Sobbe, Jan Heinrich, Lina Ellinghusen and Lisa Behm also completed the studium oecologicum course alongside Aileen Böcker. All participants are free to complete the course at their own pace.
“Such a positive response is really motivating us to further expand the certificate”
Dr. Henning Moldenhauer from the Sustainability Office of TU Dortmund University is satisfied with the results: “I’m delighted that the studium oecologicum course has been so well received by the students, and that we’re able to issue the first certificates after just two semesters. The overwhelming positive feedback from the students shows that we have struck a nerve with this course and can fill a gap in our offering. Such a positive response is really motivating us to further expand the certificate.”
In addition to the basic course in the winter semester that was predominately scientific, this past summer semester was the first time a basic course focusing on education for sustainable development (ESD) was also offered. As of the coming winter semester, students will also be able to have courses of the University of Duisburg-Essen ESD certificate credited. In addition, the Sustainability Office has applied for central quality improvement funds, which will be used to establish a Development and Coordination Office.
About studium oecologicum
TU Dortmund University has been offering studium oecologicum for two semesters now. This is a certificate that TU students can complete as an additional qualification over the course of their studies. The interdisciplinary public lecture series “Climate: Change, Values, Science” or “Education for Sustainable Development” form the basic module, designed to convey various perspectives from different fields. In the five specialization modules – Education, Society, Science and Technology, Space and Construction, and Economy – the students can then delve into the subject-specific issues related to sustainability in more detail.
