TU President Prof. Manfred Bayer welcomed the 16-member delegation consisting of representatives from the ministry, regional and local administrations, and universities. In his speech, the Vietnamese Minister of Science and Technology emphasized that Germany is one of Vietnam’s most important strategic partners in cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. Prof. Huynh Thanh Dat advocated for strengthening the exchange and partnerships between Vietnamese universities and TU Dortmund University.
Study and Exchange in Dortmund
As part of its internationalization strategy, TU Dortmund University aims to intensify exchange with Asia and already maintains several teaching and research collaborations with Vietnamese partner institutions. For instance, there are two partnerships with the University of Languages and International Sciences (ULIS) and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH). In the Erasmus+ program, for example, students from the Department of Cultural Sciences can travel to the two universities for an exchange. Conversely, eight students and staff members from USSH have already visited Dortmund.
In the winter semester 2023/2024, around 90 Vietnamese students were enrolled at TU Dortmund University. Some of them came to Dortmund through the “Studienbrücke” [Study Bridge] program, which prepares outstanding students for direct admission to a German partner university. In cooperation with the Vietnamese-German Bridge Association (VDB), the Department of Mathematics, for example, has organized counseling and preparation for the new English-language specialization “Industrial Mathematics” in the Master’s degree program in Technomathematics.
Joint Research
In addition, TU Dortmund University researchers, together with Vietnamese partners, are conducting various cooperation projects. The Faculty of Spatial Planning is also involved in several research projects in Vietnam. For example, a team led by Prof. Stefan Greiving from the Institute for Spatial Planning (IRPUD) is investigating in the Hanoi metropolitan area, how climate change affects spatial risk management, particularly in so-called informal settlements.
The Department of Spatial Information Processing and Modelling (RIM) led by Prof. Nguyen Xuan Thinh is heading the “Smart Urban Areas (SUA)” project, which is funded by the Federal Government’s Export Initiative for Environmental Technologies (EXI). In two high-rise blocks in Hanoi, researchers are examining how urban buildings can be efficiently cooled and air quality improved through facade greening and smart-controlled rainwater irrigation. To this end, the team collaborates with Vinhomes, one of the largest real estate companies in Vietnam, and the Dortmund-based technology company Wilo SE. Previously, the department had already researched flooding in the Mekong Delta and the resulting land use conflicts.
Great Interest in the Reception
As part of the delegation from Vietnam, the Minister of Science and Technology was accompanied by five Directors General of the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Vice Rector of the Vietnamese-German University, the Vice President of TU Hanoi, and the Directors of the Departments of Science and Technology of the cities of Hanoi and Can Tho as well as the provinces of Long An and Soc Trang.
The reception and networking event for the international guests was attended by more than 40 scientists and students from the UA Ruhr, the Witten/Herdecke University and the University of Hamburg, as well as representatives of medium-sized businesses from the Ruhr economic region and the Vietnamese MOST representative office in Frankfurt as well as members of the Vietnam-Germany Innovation Network. Following the reception at TU Dortmund University, the delegation from Vietnam visited the ProtaGen laboratories at the BioMedizinZentrumDortmund and the Smart Factory of Wilo SE.
