Overview

The degree program is an English-language Master of Science program with a focus on data analysis in scientific disciplines of sports science. This interdisciplinary program is designed for sports scientists with a basic background in statistics, as well as students from mathematically and technically oriented fields (statistics, computer science, mathematics). With a clear emphasis on applications in sports science, the program serves as an excellent complement to the existing Master's program "Data Science" of the Faculty of Statistics.

Skills and knowledge

The entry requirement for admission to the Master’s degree program is a successfully completed qualified Bachelor’s degree program in sports science, statistics, mathematics, computer sciences, data science or closely relevant disciplines. Additionally, an entrance examination must be passed. In this, basic knowledge and competencies in the fields of Training and Movement Science, Sports Biomechanics, Sports Medicine and Data Science are necessary.

Field of activity

Graduates of the program will find career opportunities primarily in academic research and industry (providers of sports and health technologies, consulting, and service companies). They occupy an increasingly important key position that bridges the gap between experts in the practical implementation of sports and exercise-related services (such as coaches and therapists) and professionals in fields like equipment and computer technology, administration and management, as well as policymakers. Additional potential career paths include roles within organized sports institutions (clubs, associations, commercial providers) and the healthcare sector (insurance companies, hospitals, rehabilitation centers).

The graduates
(1) can work effectively in multidisciplinary, intercultural, and international teams and are capable of acquiring new knowledge and methodologies.
(2) possesses proficiency in the theoretical foundations and concepts of data science, particularly in the context of sports and health sciences.
(3) are able to effectively utilize both theoretical and methodological knowledge to contribute meaningfully to cross-disciplinary scientific research in data science, sports medicine and health sciences, and/or movement and training.

Additional information

During the program models and concepts of performance diagnostics and training regulation, (patho-)physiological adaptation mechanisms, as well as natural and social scientific methods and procedures for data collection are acquired. A key focus of the program lies in multivariate methods for analyzing large datasets, statistical and machine learning techniques, as well as the structuring and processing of data, including the necessary programming skills. The emphasis is on learning, applying, and integrating data science methods in sports science. This integration is central to the program and is achieved through laboratory work and an interest-driven, interdisciplinary research project carried out in small groups. Within this project, students apply their acquired knowledge to a specific scientific question, ensuring a continuous link between sports medicine, health, training, and movement science content with the learned concepts from the field of Data Science. Seminars also cover topics such as the conception, planning, and organization of scientific studies, ethical and formal aspects of quality management, and science communication as well as intercultural communication skills. Following a multi-week internship, the program concludes with a Master's thesis. For the internship, students can take advantage of existing collaborations with foreign institutions.
