Combating poverty and social exclusion, ensuring better working conditions, fostering high-quality and sustainable employment – it is with these goals that the EU Program for Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI) started in May 2021. The Social Research Center Dortmund (sfs) at TU Dortmund University is a member of the German consortium, which in turn is part of the international network, and is contributing to the establishment of a German competence center for social innovation.

“After the German Bundestag, the national parliament, passed a resolution last year on the systematic promotion of social innovations, another important step is now following in the shape of the new alignment of the European Social Fund. The realization is gaining ground that social innovations can make a significant contribution to solving the major problems facing society,” says Dr. Christoph Kaletka, deputy director of the Social Research Center Dortmund. EaSI is a component of the new European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), which will run from 2021 to 2027.

In the coming two years, funding will center on the setting up of “National Competence Centers for Social Innovation”. These should help to bundle existing expertise in the countries of the European Union, to better understand the different social innovation ecosystems in the member states and to further develop these in a systematic way. In addition, the intention is to organize a process of international exchange, clarify questions in relation to already existing resources and approaches in the EU member states, and identify key stakeholders in the area of social innovation.
