The Department of Physics runs the IMAPP degree program, which enables students to specialize in particle physics, in cooperation with the University of Bologna in Italy and the University of Clermont Auvergne in France. TU Dortmund University is the spokesperson for the program. As their four-semester course is taught in English at all three universities, participants gain valuable international experience. In addition, they acquire – through comprehensive methods training – skills much in demand on the job market, from programming and machine learning to instrumentation. Furthermore, the joint IMAPP degree is a sound basis for doctoral studies afterwards.
Scholarships for the best international students
The Department of Physics at TU Dortmund University has now succeeded in convincing the European Union of this study program too. The Erasmus Mundus program accepts only those international degree programs that are excellent, offered by at least three universities from three European countries and lead to joint degrees. Thanks to the funding, TU Dortmund University will soon be able to establish a new coordination office especially for the program and organize field trips and summer schools, for example. “The funding will, however, also directly benefit the students,” emphasizes Professor Kevin Kröninger, Dean of the Department of Physics. From the 2023/24 winter semester onwards, the best international students can expect scholarships of up to €1,400 per month. “With this, we want to specifically address international students from now on who are not from Europe. Those who qualify for the scholarship will profit from having their studies financed in full,” says Kröninger.
“The international Master’s program in cooperation with the universities in Bologna and Clermont Auvergne is an important building block in our university’s progressing internationalization,” says Professor Tessa Flatten, Vice President International Affairs at TU Dortmund University. “I am therefore very pleased that funding worth millions has been secured for this degree program within the Erasmus Mundus program. This underlines the importance and appeal of the degree program and increases the international outreach of the whole university.” The IMAPP program fits into the recently published Internationalization Strategy of TU Dortmund University, in which expanding the university’s portfolio of international study programs was defined as one of the central goals.
IMAPP: Flanked by other funding
While the Erasmus Mundus scholarship is intended for the best international students, all IMAPP participants can benefit from funding from the Franco-German University (FGU). During their time abroad, they receive a FGU scholarship of up to €300 per month. To foster internationalization on its own campus as well, in the 2022 summer semester the Department of Physics also established the Ulrich Bonse Visiting Chair for Instrumentation. Within the program, a new, internationally renowned guest comes to TU Dortmund University each semester, whose courses are an integral part of the IMAPP degree program. The visiting chair is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service within its visiting lecturer program.
