Continued Support from Bildungsengel e.V.

The Bildungsengel funding program helps international researchers bridge funding gaps.
For the second time since 2022, TU Dortmund University receives funding from the non-profit organization Bildungsengel e.V. for international researchers facing financial hardship. The focus of future funding will be on international academics who have to bridge funding gaps between their Master’s degree and doctorate or between their doctorate and postdoctoral research.

Thanks to the substantial donation from the non-profit organization Bildungsengel e.V., which champions the issue of educational equality in Germany, TU Dortmund University now has additional funding of 15,000 euros at its disposal. This can be used to support international researchers facing involuntary funding gaps for up to six months with monthly installments of 250 to 1,000 euros. With this new donation from Bildungsengel e.V., another person can be supported for six months.

This initiative was launched by Bildungsengel e.V. after highly qualified researchers from crisis regions were suddenly stranded in several German university cities in 2022 with very limited access to funding. Given these circumstances, Christine and Prof. Detlef Müller-Böling, founders and chairs of Bildungsengel e.V., saw there was a clear need for support: “Our donation is a small contribution to individual social security, on the one hand, and to securing the academic potential of these individuals, on the other. We are delighted that at TU Dortmund University we can support international researchers in crisis situations through this program. Our goal is to provide funds quickly and with minimal red tape for international researchers in emergency situations.”

Prof. Tessa Flatten, Vice President International Affairs at TU Dortmund University, is also very pleased about the renewed funding: “Thanks to the donation from Bildungsengel e.V., we have been able to support seven people who were dependent on interim funding since 2022. I am particularly pleased that we have been able to provide this funding across all faculties – for example, from the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. The renewed donation allows us to build on this and continue providing financial support for researchers with minimal complications.”

Applications can be submitted to the Vice President International Affairs by professors or heads of institutes at TU Dortmund University on an ongoing basis. The funding opportunity will then be examined in close cooperation with Bildungsengel e.V.
