New prospects from now on for students on the mechanical and electrical engineering degree programs at Ruhr West University (HRW) after completing their Bachelor’s degree: They can start studying the four-semester Master’s program (M.Ed.) in “Vocational Education in Mechanical Engineering/Electrical Engineering” at TU Dortmund University immediately afterwards and by doing so qualify as teachers for vocational colleges. Such a partnership has existed between Fachhochschule Dortmund and TU Dortmund University since 2016.

In this way, the HRW and TU Dortmund University are working together to counteract the shortage of teachers at vocational colleges. “This Master’s program opens up great opportunities for our graduates. What’s more, it smooths the way if they want to enter teaching after graduating. We are very pleased that we have now concluded this cooperation agreement,” says Professor Susanne Staude, President of the HRW. The students from Mülheim an der Ruhr and Bottrop will be able to start regular teaching practice immediately after earning their M.Ed. in Vocational Education at TU Dortmund University and, once they have successfully completed it, work at a vocational college.

Counteracting the shortage of teachers

“There is a huge shortage of teachers for industrial and technical subjects at vocational schools in North Rhine-Westphalia. Lateral entry into the teaching profession can alleviate this by training students with an engineering background as teachers for such colleges. On the Master’s program, they learn how to prepare subject content for classes and to work with different learning groups in vocational education,” says Professor Wiebke Möhring, Vice President Academic Affairs at TU Dortmund University.

The Master’s program “Vocational Education in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering” is intended for engineers with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree who enjoy teaching and above all working with people. Students at Fachhochschule Dortmund have already benefited from this opportunity and a cooperation agreement between the two universities since 2016: Bachelor’s graduates in mechanical or electrical engineering from Fachhochschule Dortmund can proceed directly to the M.Ed. in Vocational Education at TU Dortmund University – entry is unconditional.

A joint information session by the two universities is planned for July 2024. For further information, please contact the Departmental Academic Coordinator, Dr. Anne Busian, at  Dr. Anne Busian.
