International Career Fair Brings Students and Companies Together

The 14th International Career Fair at TU Dortmund University gave international students and local companies an opportunity to connect.
Through the fair, which takes place each year, the university, together with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dortmund, helps international students to enter the German labor market and regional companies to find suitably qualified professionals. On 28 October, 20 companies headquartered in Dortmund or the surrounding region presented themselves at the International Meeting Center (IBZ) of TU Dortmund University and – with recruitment in mind – met students face-to-face during individual interviews.

TU Dortmund University has around 6,000 international students, which equates to about 20%. Most of them are enrolled in STEM subjects – degree programs in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. “Studying in another country calls for great adaptability and perseverance – skills that can be of tremendous benefit for employers,” said Professor Tessa Flatten, Vice President International Affairs, at the opening of the fair. “With their combination of specialist knowledge, language proficiency and intercultural competencies, our students are an excellent match for the future-oriented sectors located in Dortmund and the Ruhr region.” Like Wulf-Christian Ehrich, Deputy Chief Executive of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dortmund and Managing Board Member of the Association of Friends of TU Dortmund University (GdF), Professor Flatten was delighted with the high level of attendance: Over 300 students visited this year’s International Career Fair, which took place for the 14th time.

The fair enabled students to discover the diverse range of attractive employers in the region. In addition, staff from the Office for Migration of the city of Dortmund had their own information stand, where they answered legal questions related to right of residence in Germany. Via the “talentefinder” app, students were able to contact exhibitors beforehand, which allowed the resulting “matches” to get to know each other in advance and make appointments for the day of the fair.

From first contact to career path

Master’s student Nasim Vosoughi Osgouei, a visitor to the International Career Fair for the second time, had also arranged meetings via the app. She is studying “Automation & Robotics” at TU Dortmund University and would like to write her thesis in a corporate setting. Nasim appreciates the diversity the fair offers: “Because there are so many areas and so many different topics here, you can find exactly what you need and what you really like.” She found a suitable job offer at the fair and is now applying for it.

Andri Titan Yade, who is studying for a Master’s degree in chemical engineering, has already completed two internships during his studies. He hoped above all that the International Career Fair would help him to gain a good insight into the application process: “I don’t expect to get a job here right away. But it’s great to learn how to interact with recruiters and see what opportunities exist.” As part of the fair, the International Office of TU Dortmund University, together with partners such as the Center for Entrepreneurship & Transfer (CET) and the Federal Employment Agency, also organized various workshops to prepare students as well as possible for the application process and for entering a profession.
