What do the rusting of a steel surface and the cold resistance of a polar cod have in common? Both phenomena are closely related to processes that occur in liquids. Using examples such as the chemical compound Uranin, which fluoresces yellow-green when dissolved in water and is used, for example, in highlighters, the exhibition visually impressively explains what makes natural sciences in general and the study of solutions in particular a fascinating experience. Offers for joint experimenting for school classes accompany the presentation.
The exhibition was officially opened with a celebration on Sunday, 1 December, by Prof. Manfred Bayer, President of TU Dortmund University, Prof. Barbara Welzel, Scientific Director of Campus Stadt, Prof. Martina Havenith, spokesperson of RESOLV, Dr. Christian Strippel, who designed the exhibition, and Prof. Insa Melle, Head of the Chair of Didactics of Chemistry at TU Dortmund University. The event took place as part of Family Sunday, where an experimentation program offered children the opportunity to step into the role of researchers and explore the world of solvents. Approximately 500 people visited the exhibition on the opening day.
About RESOLV
The excellence cluster, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) since 2012, has been jointly supported by Ruhr University Bochum and TU Dortmund University since 2018. Together with scientists from the University of Duisburg-Essen and other partners, they research the role of solvents in chemical reactions, industrial processes, and biological processes.
Biophysics Day on Family Sunday, 5 January 2025
RESOLV is hosting a science day titled “Physics for Health” on Sunday, 5 January 2025, in the Brauturm at the Dortmunder U. Starting at 12:30 p.m., visitors will learn what cats and spiders, Taylor Swift, and Star Trek have to do with physics. The event is part of Family Sunday and is open to everyone – children and adults alike. The lectures will be illustrated with exciting experiments.
Program:
- 1:00 p.m. – 1:35 p.m.: “From Taylor Swift, Falling Cats, and the Physics of Hearing” (Prof. Matthias F. Schneider, TU Dortmund University)
- 1:40 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.: “The Oscar for Best Supporting Actor Goes to: Water” (Prof. Martina Havenith-Newen, Ruhr University Bochum)
- 3:00 p.m. – 3:35 p.m.: “Nature’s Solar Cells” (Prof. Anthony Watts, University of Oxford, lecture in English)
- 3:40 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.: “The Star Trek Physics – Why the Enterprise Weighs Only 158 Kilos and Other Galactic Insights” (Prof. Metin Tolan, TU Dortmund University)
Campus Stadt
At Campus Stadt, TU Dortmund University, as a partner in the Dortmunder U, regularly provides insights into research and teaching. Exhibition presentations and the space as a forum for dialogue offer the city society various event formats to get to know and discuss scientific disciplines’ questions and findings together.
The exhibition can be visited during Dortmunder U’s opening hours. Admission is free.
