Previously, so-called program accreditations were carried out at TU Dortmund University to determine whether a degree program meets the specified standards both legally and in terms of content. With this process, accreditation is obtained from the Accreditation Council with the help of an external agency. Now that the system has been successfully accredited, TU Dortmund University can now accredit existing and newly established degree programs itself and grant them the seal of the Accreditation Council. To do this, the degree programs must complete the university's own quality management system (QMS). If they meet the requirements, they are certified accordingly.
“The quality of our degree programs is central to all of us – and this has now also been verified externally by the Accreditation Council. Thanks to the newly established processes, the departments can now respond even more flexibly to changes and have become a bit less dependent on externally defined structures,” says Prof. Wiebke Möhring, Vice President Academic Affairs.
The preparations for this began as early as 2018: The Rectorate at the time commissioned a working group to set up the QMS and make it fit for system accreditation. The resulting concept was coordinated within the TU with all relevant groups and committees and finally presented to an external group of reviewers. The system was discussed and reviewed in detail in two inspections in 2021 and 2022.
Broad participation process
However, the process is not over now that the system accreditation is complete, because the QMS is under continuous development. In addition to the University Structure and Quality Management Section of the Department of University Development and Organization, the Standing Committee for Quality Development in Studies and Teaching (SK QSL) also plays a significant role. This committee was newly established as part of the development of the QMS and takes the perspective of all status groups into account.
“I’m delighted that all departments and status groups participated in the development and establishment of the quality management system,” says Prof. Wiebke Möhring. “I’m delighted that all departments and status groups participated in the development and establishment of the quality management system,” says Prof. Wiebke Möhring. This is also reflected in the Mission Statement Good Teaching, which the Senate passed in the course of the system accreditation in spring 2022.”
