On Monday, 27 May, students began setting up a protest camp for peace in the Middle East behind buildings of Fachhochschule Dortmund - University of Applied Sciences and Arts (FH). The pro-Palestinian initiative is being organized by FH students. The gathering was registered with the police. The aim is “to inform students and the general public about the situation in the Middle East and to raise awareness of the need for a peaceful solution,” according to the organizers. The camp is to initially remain in place for eight days. The police have imposed conditions.

The management of TU Dortmund University and FH Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts had already issued a statement prior to the event saying that universities must be places of open discourse and dialogue. The right to freedom of expression must be respected. “However, forms of protest must be legally compliant and free from discrimination. No one should feel threatened on our campus. Any form of anti-Semitism or racism is a red line that we will not tolerate being crossed,” reads the TU statement. In dialogue with the initiators, the university management of TU Dortmund University and FH Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts agreed in advance that research and teaching activities must not be disturbed.

Update 20 June and 15 July

The protest camp has been registered again with the police at a different location. It has been set up at Emil-Figge-Straße between the HVDC testing field and FH building 38a since 19 June. As this meadow is a public space, the university has no influence on whether and for how long the camp may remain there. In accordance with the right of assembly, this decision lies with the police.

The university has responded in an open letter to the demands made by the “Students for Palestine” to TU Dortmund University and Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts (FH Dortmund) at the beginning of July. Meanwhile, it has prohibited the use of the TU logo in images so as not to give the false impression that it is an initiative of TU Dortmund University.
