Mentors support international students entering the German job market.
The new mentoring program Tandem2Job developed by the International Office supports international students as they enter the German job market. Experienced professionals from renowned companies in the region act as mentors in one-to-one sessions and give their mentees insights into the world of work over a period of six months, in an effort to make the transition from university to their new careers as smooth as possible. The program was launched on 19 May with a digital kick-off event.

The international and intercultural nature of the new Tandem2Job mentoring program is what truly sets it apart. Most of the mentors are alumni of TU Dortmund University, some of whom have an international background themselves or have worked all over the world for many years. They work for renowned companies in the energy, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, the automotive industry, electrical engineering, and other branches of the economy. The mentees are international master’s or advanced bachelor’s students who are planning their entry into the German job market. As a group, the participants have already lived, studied or worked on almost every continent on earth.

Passing down knowledge and experience

“These tandem sessions give the mentees a unique opportunity to reflect on their personal career concerns with someone who has professional experience. The high number of applicants to the program has shown us that we are on the right track with this service and that there is a great deal of demand,” says Dr. Barbara Schneider, Head of the International Office, who is grateful to the mentors for their willingness to pass down their knowledge and experience: “Without the commitment of experienced professionals, we would not be able to offer such attractive services to our international students. We are certain that both mentees and mentors will benefit from the intercultural exchange.”

The one-to-one discussions between mentees and mentors – supervised by the program coordinators – take place over a period of around six months. To allow for peer-to-peer mentoring, the program also aims to have the mentees support each other and exchange experiences.

Pharus Project at TU Dortmund University

The new Tandem2Job mentoring program set up by the International Office is part of the Pharus Project at TU Dortmund University, which is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The aim of the project is to develop new, innovative formats to ensure the academic success of various target groups and to support them on their journey to securing highly qualified employment on the German job market. In addition to Tandem2Job, the International Office offers other career development options, such as the international career fair.
