The IEEE has around 400,000 members worldwide, professionals working in electrical engineering and information technology in either academia or industry. Each year, fellow status is awarded in recognition of professionals who have made exceptional contributions to the sector. At the turn of the year, around 400 new people will be admitted to the circle. In addition to Professor Christian Rehtanz, twelve other new fellows come from Germany.
Appointed at TU Dortmund University in 2007, Professor Rehtanz today heads the Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency and Energy Economics (ie3). As one of Germany’s leading higher education institutes, ie3 conducts research on transport and distribution networks, system integration of renewable energy sources and automation of energy systems. Within the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), Professor Rehtanz coordinates the competence field “Energy – System –Transformation”, which focuses on research into sustainable energy systems and deals with topics such as security of supply, environmental compatibility, economic efficiency and acceptance with regard to the energy transition. Professor Rehtanz also holds overall responsibility for the competence field “Energy” in the “Masterplan Science” of the City of Dortmund.
The last time a member of TU Dortmund University was awarded the distinction of IEEE Fellow was in 2009: It was conferred on Professor Peter Marwedel from the Department of Computer Science thirteen years ago for his contributions in the field of embedded microelectronic systems design and compiler technology.
