Apart from the new open access funding criteria of the German Research Foundation, there is also a new Publication Guideline issued by TU Dortmund University.
The German Research Foundation is supporting TU Dortmund University with funds of €330,000 for the publication of articles in open access journals over the next three years. Dr. Kathrin Höhner from the University Library explains the new funding criteria. She is also the contact person for the new Publication Guideline issued recently by the university.

Open access means free access to scientific literature on the internet. As a rule, to be able to publish articles in open access journals a fee must be paid. TU Dortmund University has financed this since 2015 from a fund managed by the University Library. In December 2021, the German Research Foundation announced that it was awarding TU Dortmund University a grant of around €330,000 for the coming three years for open access publications. The German Research Foundation had already funded this for the maximum duration of six years up until 2021. To continue helping researchers to publish their work, TU Dortmund University then made its own funds available.

If a document is published in an open access journal, interested parties can read and download the full text and thus make use of it free of charge. This has many advantages for the authors, says Dr. Kathrin Höhner, who is in charge of Information Skills and Publication Support at the University Library. “The articles are easy to find on the internet and permanently archived. It is also easier to find plagiarized versions of the articles by means of automated techniques. In addition, the rights remain with the author.”

New criteria for open access publications

The new program of the German Research Foundation also includes new funding criteria: the deciding factor is publication in a high-quality, purely open access journal. Purely open access journals are characterized by the fact that they are not subscription-based. The journals’ quality is assessed by the departments, which have compiled positive lists accordingly. Should no list be available from a department, the following applies: The journal must be listed among the Top 10 in the first quartile, that is, rank among the best journals in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) in the respective subject category, and it must be a purely open access journal.

Publication Guideline of TU Dortmund University

So that publications by members of TU Dortmund University gain better visibility at international level, the university has issued a Publication Guideline. To be seen and acknowledged by experts worldwide, it is essential that publications are attributed correctly to the author and that the author is attributed to TU Dortmund University. The advice provided in the guideline is intended to help increase the visibility both of individual research results and of the university.

“In the course of increasing digitalization, linking author and publication has become easier, but also more important,” explains Dr. Höhner. Using the ORCID iD can ensure that publications are clearly attributed to their authors. Having registered once with ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor), an alliance of numerous scientific institutions and publishers worldwide, authors keep their ID for life. For institutional affiliation, in turn, it is important to note a number of points, such as correct spelling. In addition, TU Dortmund University should always be stated as the institution, and not only the department, institute or chair.

The Publication Guideline applies for all kinds of publications in all types of media. It is available in German and English.
