The IFS Virtual Keynote Series will be addressing the topic of "Agency and Structures in Education and Development Across the Lifespan". Prof. Dr. Kaspar Burger from the University of Zurich and Prof. Jutta Heckhausen from the University of California Irvine will hold keynotes on the topic. The event, organised by the Center for Research on Education and School Development (IFS), will take place online via Zoom.

First, Prof. Jutta Heckhausen from the University of California Irvine will talk about the "Individual Agency and Societal Structuring of Life Course and Social Mobility". Prof. Heckhausen will address how individual differences in regard to goal selection, optimism, and action-orientation among others are critical for adaptive developmental agency - especially under conditions of major age-graded changes in opportunities, or uncertainty due to societal upheavals associated with sociopolitical conflict, and global pandemics.

Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Kaspar Burger from the University of Zurich will investigate "The Interplay of Agency and Structure in Educational Trajectories: Evidence from Different Cohorts and Contexts" in his keynote. Burger's talk will discuss how institutional structures channel educational trajectories while also allowing for mobility between educational paths, and how individual agency contributes to this mobility. He will consider the importance and interplay of individual agency and institutional structures.

The two keynotes will be followed by a moderated discussion.

You can register for the event here. The participation is free of charge.
