The results help TU Dortmund University to assess how large the vaccination gap still is and how special vaccination offers for students should be designed. According to the survey, 68 percent of the approximately 6,600 participants have already been fully vaccinated, and another 24 percent have already received their first vaccination. Less than one percent said they had already made an appointment for vaccination. Only two percent of all respondents said they would not like to be vaccinated. Around 300 students would in principle like to be vaccinated on campus, but for the majority it was not the most practical option.
Back to classroom teaching through herd immunity
“We are pleased with the results of the survey. TU Dortmund University is calling on all students to be fully vaccinated. The goal is to achieve herd immunity in time for the winter semester so that classroom teaching can resume on campus,” says President Prof. Manfred Bayer. “Now it is also important to motivate other people to be vaccinated.” Currently, the vaccination rate among 18- to 59-year-olds in North Rhine-Westphalia is only around 52 percent (fully vaccinated) or 65 percent (vaccinated once).
Second vaccination campaign on campus canceled
A successful vaccination campaign was already held on the TU campus on 12 July during which both students and employees were vaccinated. The campaign, organized on short notice with the mRNA vaccine from BioNTech/Pfizer, was very well received: Around 250 places were allocated for first and second vaccinations.
Another vaccination event was planned for Wednesday, 28 July, on campus. However, this had to be canceled because demand was too low: Although the event was promoted in three universities, only 20 registrations were received. Those who had booked a vaccination appointment on campus were shown alternatives in Dortmund.
Appointments still available in vaccination centers
Students who still need a vaccination appointment can book one via the central website of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung at the local vaccination center or get vaccinated there spontaneously and without an appointment. Currently, appointments for vaccination in the BVB stadium can be booked for July. Additionally, people who had been infected with the coronavirus can be vaccinated as early as four weeks after the symptoms have subsided.
