“Violence doesn't get to my campus!” is the motto of the joint campaign by Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, FH Südwestfalen, Studierendenwerk Dortmund and TU Dortmund University to mark the International Day against Violence against Women on November 25, which was extended to the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia this year.
Under the motto “Violence doesn’t get to my campus!,” special bread bags are distributed in cafeterias and dining halls at around 30 university locations in NRW on the occasion of the International Day Against Violence Against Women on 25 November. The campaign was already carried out in 2023 by the equal opportunities offices of TU Dortmund University, FH Dortmund, FH Südwestfalen, and the Association of Student Affairs.

About 10,000 printed paper bags have been distributed in the cafeterias and dining halls of the Dortmund Association of Student Affairs since 22 November to package baked goods and raise awareness of the issue. The print on the bags is not only intended to raise awareness but also to offer concrete assistance: They are illustrated with a depiction of the “Silent Help Signal” – a sequence of finger movements that women can use in emergency situations.

Information on counseling centers

In addition to the illustrations, QR codes are printed on the fold of the bag, which lead to the websites of the cooperation partners. Here, interested parties can find more information about the campaign day and the initiatives in the fight against violence against women, as well as phone numbers of counseling centers and the Dortmund Women’s Shelter.

“I am very pleased that our campaign ‘Violence doesn’t get to my campus’ has been taken up by the equal opportunity officers of the universities and the associations of student affairs in NRW,” says Martina Stackelbeck, central Equal Opportunities Officer at TU Dortmund University. “This shows how many social protagonists consider it important to stand together against violence against women.” This year, for the first time, the other two universities of the University Alliance Ruhr are also involved: Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The bag was designed by Viola Dessin, a student in the design department at FH Dortmund. She has included not only graphics of the “Silent Help Signal” but also the sentence “No to violence against girls and women” in a total of thirteen languages.

Special flagging on the TU Dortmund University campus

Additionally, around 25 November, special flags in the same design as the bags were flown on the TU Dortmund University campus. These show the “Silent Help Signal” in large format. With their orange color scheme, they join the worldwide campaign “Orange Your City.” Furthermore, TU Dortmund University is also participating in a local action in which orange paper bags are also distributed in bakeries around Dortmund, drawing attention to the International Day against Violence against Women.
