TU Dortmund University’s support for academics setting up their own businesses as university spin-offs is outstanding. In the newest evaluation of the “Start-up Radar” of the Stifterverband (an initiative devoted to consulting, networking, and promoting improvements in the fields of education, science, and innovation), TU Dortmund University has achieved fifth place in the overall ranking among German universities with over 15,000 students. According to the study, the university provides “exemplary support for start-ups”.

The Stifterverband uses its “Start-up Radar” to look at and compare the efforts universities are making to boost start-up culture. One of TU Dortmund University’s guarantees for success in this context is the Center for Entrepreneurship & Transfer (CET). “In the course of CET’s commendation as an “Exzellenz Start-up Center.NRW”, and thanks to the funding awarded in conjunction with this, we’ve been able to significantly expand and enhance our activities in support of start-ups in the last 18 months,” says Albrecht Ehlers, Chancellor of TU Dortmund University and member of CET’s executive board.

This is reflected in the Stifterverband’s ranking: Since the last “Start-up Radar”, which was conducted in 2018, TU Dortmund University has been able to improve its performance in many sub-areas, such as awareness-raising and networking. This time, the university has achieved particularly high scores in the category “Structural and Institutional Anchoring of Start-up Support”. Evaluated in this category, among others, are transfer strategies and the setting up of a central coordination unit offering advisory services for start-ups. The inclusion of the topics of start-ups and transfer in the university’s “Agreement on Objectives” and a transfer and start-up strategy documented in written form have also contributed to its top ranking.

Results from 42 institutions evaluated

“This great result has shown us where our strengths lie. We must make greater use of these now and transpose them into significantly more research and start-up projects,” stresses Ehlers. According to the study, there is still room for improvement in the area of start-up activities.

The “Start-up Radar” is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and conducted by the Stifterverband in cooperation with the Marga and Kurt Möllgaard Foundation. It was compiled by the Stifterverband for the first time in 2012. In the study, all state and state-approved private universities are asked about their activities in support of start-ups. For the ranking of the largest universities, the results from 42 institutions were evaluated.
