Physics Professor from the United States to Teach at TU Dortmund University in the Summer Semester

“The new visiting chair makes a significant contribution to the internationalization of teaching,” says Prof. Kevin Kröninger, Dean of the Department of Physics. “Our students get an impression of teaching concepts and lecturers from abroad – and all on our home campus.” All visiting professors are renowned in the field of instrumentation. This is an important area for physicists, because scientific instruments required for research cannot usually be simply purchased and have to be developed by physicists themselves. In particle physics, for example, working groups from all over the world are jointly developing the large-scale experiments on the LHC particle accelerator at the Swiss research center CERN. In solid state and medical physics, complex measuring systems also have to be built from individual components.

Other guests from Canada, Japan and Italy are expected

Andreas Jung is the first visiting professor in the new program. He is an old friend of TU Dortmund University, having earned his diploma here in 2004. He now lives in the United States and holds a professorship in physics and astronomy at Purdue University in Indiana. The experimental particle physicist conducts research on the CMS experiment at CERN, where he is involved in further developing detectors that can provide new insights into the physics of heavy quarks. As part of his visiting professorship at TU Dortmund University, he will hold English-language courses and conduct examinations. He will also have the opportunity to participate in research projects and supervise theses.

On a technical level, all visiting professors will give their students new inspiration by building a bridge between theoretical training in instrumentation and their practical experience. Over the next three semesters, the Department of Physics is expecting to welcome additional guests from Canada, Japan and Italy. The visiting professors’ classes are an integral part of the international master’s program “Advanced Methods in Particle Physics”. This highly specialized program with a focus on particle physics has been offered since the 2021/22 winter semester in cooperation with the University of Bologna in Italy and the University of Clermont Auvergne in France and culminates in a joint degree from all three universities.

The namesake, Prof. Ulrich Bonse

The new visiting chair is named after Prof. Ulrich Bonse. He came to the newly founded University of Dortmund in 1970 and is a founding member of the Department of Physics, which he continued to shape even after his retirement in 1993. Among other things, he was Dean of the Department, Senator of the University and Vice President Research. Prof. Bonse has received several awards for his research and his commitment to TU Dortmund University. His main research areas were X-ray interferometry and X-ray microtomography with synchrotron radiation.

Visiting Professor & Visiting Scholar Program

In an effort to make teaching at TU Dortmund University more international, the Vice Rector International Affairs, Prof. Tessa Flatten, launched the “Visiting Professor & Visiting Scholar Program” in fall 2021, in which Prof. Andreas Jung is also participating. As part of the new program, all departments have the opportunity to invite guests from abroad to TU Dortmund University. The Rectorate rewards these activities by issuing the guests a letter of invitation and a certificate for their stay. The International Office also provides support through a variety of welcome services.
