Enrollment for the new program in “Econometricsis“ is possible up until 4 October.

A new degree program jointly run by TU Dortmund University, Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen will start in the 2019/2020 winter semester: The 4-semester, English-taught master’s program in “Econometrics” brings together economics, mathematics and statistics. Enrollment is possible up until 4 October.

This new program is aimed at students with excellent English language skills who hold a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics or economics and already have some prior knowledge of the other two subjects. “This is because econometrics brings together precisely these three disciplines,” says Professor Carsten Jentsch, Professor for Economic and Social Statistics at TU Dortmund University. This means that students learn statistical methods in the new M.Sc. program for which they need to master the fundamentals of mathematics. They then apply these methods to economic data. To this purpose, they learn in statistics and informatics courses how to handle large volumes of data efficiently.

The ultimate objective is to answer economically relevant questions and to analyze and evaluate economic interrelationships. Professionals with these abilities are in demand both as policy advisers as well as in the private sector, says Professor Jentsch. There are also opportunities in academia: Econometrics is an innovative field of research and an increasingly important subject in teaching.

The economics faculties of the UA Ruhr members (the universities of Bochum, Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen) as well as the Faculty of Statistics at TU Dortmund University will offer the new M.Sc. program from the 2019/2020 winter semester onwards. It will be the first program jointly run by all three universities in the Ruhr region. Coordinated timetables will allow students to study easily and efficiently across all three locations.

The Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR) is sponsoring the new cross-university master’s program.
