Recent political and social events have brought anti-Semitism and racism to the fore: the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the subsequent war in the Gaza Strip have also led to tensions and attacks in Germany, including violent clashes at universities. At the same time, the AfD's successes in European and state elections show that resentment against people with a history of immigration is on the rise. The UA Ruhr action days aim to make anti-Semitism and racism visible and to reflect on them academically, as well as to promote understanding and provide protection.
Four program items in English
The program will mainly be held in German, but the following four events are offered in English: On 30 October, there will be a panel discussion at Ruhr University Bochum entitled “Palestinians and Jews for Peace - Rehumanize”. Dr. Dekel Peretz from the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen will speak on 14 November in an online lecture on “Dialogue in times of Crisis. Muslim-Jewish Encouters in Berlin in the Shadow of the October 7th Israel-Gaza War”. The day before, two academics from England will examine “Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism in Europe” in an online lecture. In addition, there will be an English-language guided tour of the “Stolpersteine”, stones set into the streets in memory of victims of the Holocaust, in Bochum on 8 November.
TU Dortmund University will host some events in German: On 31 October, a rabbi will talk about Jewish life in the Ruhr region. On 5 November, Marina Chernivsky from the OFEK e.V. advice center will explain how to deal with anti-Semitism and protect those affected. In an online lecture on 11 November, the two social scientists Dr. Lukas Otterspeer and Dr. Christoph Haker will explain how right-wing populism and extremism affect universities both internally and externally. In an online lecture on 29 October, Holocaust survivor Ernst Grube will talk about deportation and imprisonment in camps during his childhood in the Third Reich. Together with Ruhr University Bochum, online forums designed as Safer Spaces for Jewish students (29.10.) and Palestinian students (7. and 12.11.) will also be offered.
The entire program is published online. Registration is required for participation in each event. A code of conduct applies.
