Overview

The Master’s in Statistics builds on the Bachelor’s degree program in Statistics. Taking into account the demands and changes in the professional world, teaching and learning are designed to equip students with the necessary specialist knowledge, skills, and methods. The aim is to enable them for scientific work, critical classification of scientific knowledge, and responsible action.

In the Master’s degree program, knowledge of mathematical statistics is deepened through compulsory elective courses in various special fields (such as nonparametric methods, robust statistical methods, econometrics, and clinical studies). In addition to dealing with essential statistical procedures, independent work is also promoted through a variety of projects.

Skills and knowledge

Prerequisite for enrollment in the Master’s degree program is a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics or an equivalent subject. The final grade must be at least 2.7.

Field of activity

Graduates of the Department of Statistics work primarily in medical and pharmaceutical research, in banking and insurance, or in marketing and quality control for large and small companies. Other popular areas of work include management consulting, software development, and market and opinion research. Unemployment is practically unknown among our graduates.

The possible uses of statistics are constantly expanding, since it is becoming increasingly easy to collect data. Compared to the situation in Great Britain or the United States, where there are dozens of statistics departments and tens of thousands of trained statisticians, the potential for employment in Germany is far from exhausted.

In comparison to graduates of the Bachelor’s program, our Master's graduates have a learning experience more strongly shaped by the aspect of research.

Additional information

Those who would like to can spend one or two semesters at one of our numerous partner universities, studying for example in England, Spain, France, Italy, or Turkey. Long-term partnerships between the Dortmund Department of Statistics and these universities guarantee problem-free recognition of credits received abroad.

An external internship can be substituted for the course Case Studies 2.

By choosing a suitable focus area, you can already prepare yourself, during your education, for the special requirements of the desired professional field. Currently the major focus areas available are Biometrics, Econometrics / Empirical Economic Research, Technometry, and Official Statistics. However, studying without a declared focus is also possible.

Successful completion of the Master’s program is a qualification for pursuing the doctoral degree in Statistics.
